Frequently Misused &
Misspelled Words

People often use certain words for some other words by mistake. The following words are some of the misused words and their real meaning.

FARTHER More far or more distant, whereas Further generally means a more advanced degree or extent.

THAN Statement of difference (e.g., greater than, smaller than etc.), whereas then relates to time (e.g., He reached there early and then had dinner).

DISINTERESTED Unbiased, impartial or neutral, whereas Uninterested is aloofness or lacking interest.

IRREGARDLESS This word does not exist but is often used for regardless.

BESIDE At side of or closed to. Besides means in addition to.

MARKETING The art of selling products. It is often used in error for Shopping, which means Goods purchased in shops.

AFFECTING Producing effect on, whereas effecting means resulting or bringing about.

FEW Small in number. It is used with countable objects (e.g., This department has few employees), whereas Less is an adjective that means small in amount or degree. It is used with objects of indivisible mass (e.g., Which jar holds less water?).

ALTOGETHER Entirely (e.g., I am altogether pleased to be receiving this award), but All together is applied to people or things that are being treated as a group (e.g., We put the pots and pans all together on the shelf).

DISCRETE Separate or individually distinct (e.g., Each company in the conglomerate operates as a discrete entity), whereas Discreet means prudent or modest (e.g., Her discreet handling of the touchy situation put him at ease).

ALTERNATELY In turn; one after the other (e.g., We alternately spun the wheel in the game), but Alternatively is an adverb that means on the other hand; one or the other (e.g., You can choose a large bookcase or, alternatively, you can buy two small ones).

ALLUSION Indirect reference (e.g., The speech made allusions to the final report). Illusion is a noun that means a misconception (e.g., The policy is designed to give an illusion of reform).

COMPLEMENT Something that completes or makes up a whole (e.g., The red sweater is a perfect complement to the outfit). Compliment means an expression of praise or admiration (e.g., I received compliments about my new outfit).
